baby, family, photos, she only smiles quilt

Oh. my. gosh. Two weeks since my last post! There’s no excuse. But, in my defense, we’ve been busy. Good busy, corn-on-the-cob busy, Old Town Hill busy, biscuits-and-honey-and-brand-new-quilts busy:

But we’ve also been plenty of bad busy too. Lucy had a minor infection that required a week of antibiotics. She didn’t feel well or eat great because of it, and I also had to clean the house–WITH BLEACH–from top to bottom. Several times. I’m just now getting my feet back under me. Lucy’s back to 100%, thank goodness for her kind pediatrician, sulfa drugs and Elmo On Demand. (Needless to say, we’ve been indulging in a little too much television.)

I was able to finish my green She Also Smiles quilt, and gifted it to a friend who is moving to Portland. I think she was pleased. Image

I had a heck of a time getting a picture of it, because when Lucy hears that camera beep, she’s pretty sure she’s supposed to be posing. Also, she’s got this thing about walking on differently-textured surfaces, so she loves to have a quilt spread on the floor to play, sit, and watch television from.

Today? More cutting. I have a new quilt top to show you sometimes this week (as soon as I can snap a toddler-free picture of it) and I’m already ready to start a new project! Here’s hoping to avoid any baby-illness-related unexpected hiatuses. 🙂

quilts, she only smiles quilt

Yesterday I laid out the blocks for my She Only Smiles green quilt. I’m…warming up to it, but slowly. Probably only I would have chosen these odd fabrics to go together. (And this is probably because I am a fabric-choosing doofus.)

I’m thinking one of my quilting goals for the year needs to be “learn to choose fabrics correctly,” and/or, “no more using fat quarter bundles of a collection and calling it a quilt.”

Even still, I’m in love-love-love with some of these prints, like these aqua scalloped diamonds, or see the yellow-cream-and-grey plaid in the upper-right of this photo? What a great Joann’s find from DS Quilts! Today found me piecing the rows in the air-conditioned apartment while the baby napped for three and a half hours. Which, really, is sometimes all you can do on a hot day.

baby, pizza dough, she only smiles quilt

After running all over town all week long, Lucy and I (well, especially I) are glad to spend a Friday at home.

There are crappy flash-auto indoor shots in our apartment’s low morning light. OR, *ahem*, toddling around with blocks making weird eyebrow-raising faces? This eyebrow thing is Lucy’s new aren’t-I-just-ridiculous-with-cuteness look. She loves to stand in front of the mirror and do it. Funny because she doesn’t really have eyebrows, amirite?

There are bowls of yeasty bubbly pizza dough wonderfulness. You don’t think that photo is appetizing? No? I think to love this stuff you gotta smell it all in its warm boozy glory. It’s Jim Lahey’s no-knead pizza dough, and it is for serious pizza lovers, and for winners. We don’t have many family traditions but Pizza Friday is serious and sacred, and it is brought to you by Jim Lahey and his miraculous pizza dough. Thank you.

And dining room tables COVERED in quilt mess. I’m making slow progress on the She Only Smiles quilt. It’ll be a signature quilt, and I whipped out the name blocks in about 30 minutes while Lucy slept too long the other afternoon. I really need this thing to turn out nice, and I’m having minor-to-moderate doubts. We’ll see. Back to my quilt pile before Lucy gets up for her second outdoor jaunt of our lazy Friday!

embroidery, fan quilt, quilts, she only smiles quilt

And then she pulls the packed suitcase to pieces. And then she laughs.

We’re headed South to a wedding tomorrow. As it turns out, the only thing worse than packing your own crap for a wedding is packing your crap plus your kid’s crap while your kid toddles along behind you, slinging every folded, packed, or stacked thing around above her head. I hadn’t had a chance to take a picture of the wedding gift quilt, and the underwear isn’t folded, and I’d like to have a quilt top plus a pillow pieced by, oh, the day we get back, and ALL I want to do is sit with the Pouilly Fuisse in the fridge and read the last chapter of Are You My Mother (which I saved for myself last night, because the book is out of control good and it needed not to be finished in a great gulp)…needless to say, the apartment is a disaster and I’m beat before we’ve even left for the airport.
